Coming Up: Tshirt Design Competition Closes Friday

How quickly time flies!

I know a few designers who wait until time is almost completely up before they even start working on a project. The astounding thing is they manage to make the work look as if they've spent endless hours labouring over it to bring it to perfection. Well, all you JIB-NOT (just in the bloody nick of time) designers out there, it's time to get to get cracking, because the JOY tshirt design competition closes this Friday!

So grab your crayons, textas, pencils or design applications and design a t-shirt for JOY in 2010 that will represent the diversity of your GLBTIQmunity. Throw in some colour, add some craziness, mix in some style. So show us what you think makes JOY 94.9 a great station and a voice for the gay and lesbian community.

The winning design will be printed on all the JOY 94.9 volunteer t-shirts and will be worn with pride at all the major gay and lesbian and public events the station will be involved with in 2010, including Midsumma, Pride March, Mardi Gras, Melbourne Queer Film Festival and National Youth Week.

To sweeten the pot even more there’s also great prizes up for grabs for the best entries including CDs, DVDs... and as a very extra special last second edition, there are two tickets to the ultimate New Year's Eve party Sensation Ocean of White. They're valued at more than $300 and it's for a fricken awesome party, so what are you waiting for? Get ya design on for JOY!

PS. Check out the video for Sensation. Might inspire something creative!

Report: JOY Gets Its Guerrilla On

I'm very happy to report that we're doing bringing back old school style guerrilla marketing into the mix here at JOY 94.9. The creative style of advertising called "guerilla marketing" started off as an ideal way for companies and brands to cut through the clutter and crack the "fast-foward through the ads" mentality that formed as people (or as companies would call them, consumers) actually started taking control of media and using it on demand.

For large companies boring big market spend on TV, radio and billboards with a natty one-to-many message didn't engage audiences. This gave small companies that could be imaginative rather than relying on budgets to get their message across a competitive edge. The style that emerged was a method of advertising that would hit people in ways that were unexpected and sometimes even unconsciously.

Here at JOY 94.9 we've struck it lucky and getting the best of "big money spend" and subliminal advertising. And we've not even had to spend a single cent. It's nice having friends in high places isn't it?

Above is a zoom in of the giant billboard pictured at the top of this post as spotted by keen eyed volunteer Nick Bassett at Flinders Street Station. These billboards are also at public locations all across Melbourne and they all feature quite proudly the fact that the driver likes to listen to JOY 94.9.

To the design crew at Nissan, who clearly like to listen to JOY 94.9 in the car, thank you very much. If it wasn't the design team, then thank you to the god of serendipity!

And if you don't want to leave the comfort of your home, there's also the Nissan website with the 94.9 clearly marked too.

Report: JOY Appoints New GM

Hear ye, hear ye! I come bearing most excellent news that the JOY Board has appointed Danae Gibson (pictured) as the new General Manager of JOY 94.9.

President Stephen Duns said, "We are very excited to have Danae Gibson as our General Manager. Though there was an extremely strong field of applicants, it became clear that Danae was the preferred candidate. She will be an excellent addition to the JOY team.”

Danae has a strong history in community broadcasting, volunteering, queer activism and journalism, she joins JOY 94.9 from RTRfm, a community station in Perth WA. There she worked in a variety of roles since 1992, including board member, presenter of the station’s first gay and lesbian program Sheer Queer(s) in the early 90s, and recently as regular presenter of Morning Magazine a pop culture, current affairs and news program. Most recently, Danae has been a lecturer in radio broadcasting at Central TAFE in Perth.

Danae will start on November 9 and she said, “I’ve really enjoyed the process of getting to know the fantastic community station that is JOY 94.9 and I’m really excited about joining the family.”

As for me, I'm very excited about working with Danae having met her before she joined Doug Pollard on Freshly Doug yesterday on her first JOY 94.9 on air outing. As for you, it might mean there will be more posts on this here blog as I prepare to slip into marketing saddle again. Keep your eyes peeled as all the excitement of JOY 94.9's 16th Birthday, Midsumma and Mardi Gras are only just around the corner, giddy up!

Report: More Office Antics at JOY 94.9

It's time for an update and given the popularity of the last one which showed what the JOY 94.9 gang gets up to behind the microphone, I'd give you more. These photos were taken from a recent Programming Get Together we had at the station and it's really just to show of all the gorgeous smiley faces that we have here.

I think it's so wonderful to see the amazing diversity of our beautiful volunteers. A huge variety of ages, gender, races and height - among other things - come through the station every week. Being short, I consider myself a representative of the little people here at JOY.

The collection of happy volunteers above are very dear to me as most of them have been my mentors at some stage or another. In front is News Director Tim Lennox, in the second row is Simon and Paul of Global Sounds and Jeanette, in the third row is office admin coordinators Rod and Anne and finally in the back is newsy and host of daytime favourite The Great Value Radio Show Gary Wilson.

It's a president's convention! Former presidents Jeff Hood and Carol Wilkinson (both also presenters on Saturday Magazine) catch up with current president Stephen Duns.

If the collective noun is a mischief of mice, a nuisance of cats or a mute of hounds - what should a gathering of community radio broadcasters be called? If only you could get them to be mute! Well, I think the most correct term would be a team of broadcasters. Above you have in the team, in the front row Jade our Content Producer and Diff'Rent Strokes, Sarah from Gen Next, Bek, James from Hide and Seek and Daniel from Theme Party, in the back row is Conrad our Sponsorship Supervisor, Steve Toms from Gen Next and Glitter and Tonik and Nick, also from Gen Next.

Jade and Daniel were following me while I was taking photos - here they are again. Next to them is Chris Furneaux our Membership Coordinator and Life Member, Lisa and Mez Moon.

More wonderful volunteers. Gary Wilson (again) and our Taste of Radio graduates Peter, Sue, Lonnie and Lisa. You can always here our graduates strutting their stuff on Wednesday Training Wheels and Sue now even has her own women's current affairs program called Hear Me Raw on Thursdays.
