In conjunction with our sister station SYN 90.7 and very good friends The Foundation for Young Australians, JOY 94.9 is incredibly proud to be presenting the Boroondara Theatre Company production of The History Boys directed by Bryce Ives.Bryce is a bit of a star around the community radio traps, and similarly he's been connected to a series of outstanding productions in the theatre world in recent times, including You're a Good Man Charlie Brown and The Call Girl. Bryce's latest foray is Englishman Alan Bennett's 2004 play which enjoyed a run on Broadway before being turned into a motion picture film. Bryce has happily declared this to be his first 'straight' play, seeing as it's not a musical as many have come to expect from him, but initial impressions can be deceiving, so be prepared for a few interesting twists and turns as a closeted character joins the fray and reportedly some of the members of the cast are blessed with impressive vocal pipes that they are not afraid to make use of.
The play itself is bound to appeal to everyone who's ever been to school, lived in the eighties or challenged the status quo. This story could be yours; it tells the story of final year grammar school boys in the eighties embarking on that doomed journey common to all adolescent boys - the quest to discover sex and spirituality. The History Boys also brings into the equation a temp staff member who teaches the lads some sneaky exam passing techniques. So, for all the grownups, come have a looksee and relive your high school days (perhaps nod wisely in agreement) and for the young'uns, go see it and you're guaranteed to ace all upcoming tests. Promise.
Rehearsals are underway and have been progressing spectacularly, with the production set for observation at the Cromwell Theatre in South Yarra on July 18. Recommended is a visity to the multimedia conglomerate that is ramping up the hype for this brilliant show, including their website, facebook and twitter.
